New York City is one of the world’s most influential cities. Situated on the Atlantic coast of the United States, it serves as a global center for economic activity, political power, knowledge, and influence. While not topping the “World’s Largest Cities” list, New York City is the third largest metro area in the western hemisphere with over twenty million people.
The flow of immigrants into “the land of the free” exploded in the mid-1800s and in 1892, the United States Immigration Station opened on Ellis Island. Until it was closed in 1954, the station processed nearly 17 million people from almost every conceivable ethnicity. To this day, New York City continues to be the top destination for immigrants to the United States.
